Rail Walks in the West Midlands

(Links to external websites)

A 100 miles of new walks which follow all the lines in Worcestershire.  Andy Stevenson, one of our founders alongside Worcestershire Ramblers, mapped and illustrated the material for these walks in partnership with Worcestershire CRP. Andy has developed these guides as part of his research at the University of Worcester and Point2 Guides self.

This club, affiliated to the Ramblers, offers group walks all by public transport, mainly by rail.

Walks in: Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull (linear and circular).

Walks along the line from Derby, through Staffordshire and Cheshire, to Crewe (linear and circular).

Dozens of circular and linear walks by public transport (rail and bus) in the midlands counties.

We organise free guided walks every Saturday from railway stations along ALL of the lines which radiate from Shrewsbury.  In addition to the Heart of Wales line we have walks from the Marches line, generally from stations to Hereford but as far as Abergavenny in the summer;  the Shrewsbury to Chester line and beyond along the North Wales Coast and on the Cheshire lines; the Shrewsbury-Crewe line and the Shrewsbury to Wolverhampton line. Rail Rambles is not a membership club.

It was established in 1989 specifically to encourage people to use rail to access the countryside or walking rather than to use cars.  All of the walks are guided and are freely open to the general public.  Anyone can come on the walks shown on our programme simply by catching the train shown (departure times are shown as from Shrewsbury).

We have a library of some 130 walks undertaken previously either circular from a station or linear between stations. Generally the walks are between 6 and 10 miles long.  For health and safety reasons we have two leaders for every walk who recce the route together shortly before the walk is due to take place and who undertake a risk assessment.
